Privacy Policy

Effective August 25, 2026

Queequeg is a reading journal app made by an individual developer, not a company. This page explains what happens to your data when you use it — in plain language, because that's the whole policy.

The short version

• Everything you enter — books, authors, chapter summaries, characters, notes, and events — stays on your device.
• If you have iCloud Sync turned on (the default), that data also syncs to your own private iCloud account, using Apple's CloudKit.
• We — the developer — never see, receive, or have access to your data. There is no server we run, no database we host, and no account system to sign up for.
• Queequeg does not use analytics, advertising, or tracking of any kind. It does not talk to any third-party services.

What data Queequeg stores

Everything you type into the app: book titles and authors, start/finish dates, chapter summaries, character notes, major events, and free-form notes. This is stored locally on your device using Apple's on-device storage (SwiftData).

iCloud Sync

If iCloud Sync is enabled (Settings → iCloud Sync), your reading journal is synced through Apple's CloudKit to your own private iCloud database — the same private storage space used by apps like Notes or Reminders. It isn't shared with anyone, including us. We have no access to it; Apple's standard iCloud terms and security apply to that storage, not ours.

You can turn iCloud Sync off at any time from the app's Settings screen. Turning it off stops new syncing; your existing books remain on your device either way. Deleting data already in iCloud (for example, after uninstalling the app) can be done from your device's Settings app under your Apple ID → iCloud → Manage Account Storage.

What we don't do

• No analytics or crash-reporting SDKs.
• No advertising or ad networks.
• No tracking across apps or websites.
• No account creation, email collection, or login of any kind.
• No selling, renting, or sharing of your data — we don't have it to share.

Children's privacy

Queequeg is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect any information from anyone, regardless of age — the app simply has no mechanism to send data anywhere.

Changes to this policy

If this policy ever changes, the update will be posted on this page with a new effective date above.
